CASE STUDY: EMMA’S STORY

Business Administration Level 4 Cardtronics

Emma Nancarrow, National Account Manager at Cardtronics, based in Hatfield, recently completed the Level 4 Business Administration Apprenticeship with SR Education and gained a distinction. SR Education wanted to find out more about Emma’s experience and how it has assisted her within her role.

Challenging and Relevant Content

‘I thought the course was really relevant and extremely challenging from the start, with tutors and peers supporting each other throughout. I have been challenged more than I thought possible, in a way that has made me realise that I have so much more to offer and that we can all continue to learn and develop new skills.  It’s been demanding but I have learnt so much about business operations and practices at a much deeper level.  I am much more confident in presenting to my team, managers and other people and continue to grow in confidence in this area.

The apprenticeship was tailored to each of our unique needs meaning I could select certain components that suited and benefitted by role with Cardtronics – thus maximising the relevancy of the skills I was learning and developing.

The tutors were brilliant. Not only were they clearly experts, they understood our different learning styles and were great at getting the most from each of us – as individuals.

I loved being challenged as it made my understanding of various subjects much deeper and to be able to debate your opinions is always a benefit in business.

Day-to-day I have seen an increase in my confidence and understanding of reporting, coupled with a higher level of management. I would recommend the Level 4 to anyone wanting to take the next step in their careers.’

Perfect Partners

We also spoke to Samantha Williams, European HR Business Partner at Cardtronics, about how the programme has helped the business. Here is what she had to say:

“We have partnered with SR Education for a while now and have always found them and their tutors to be engaging, relevant and challenging – which is exactly what our business and employees need.  We see an improvement in all those that participate and it definitely helps support our business growth and talent recognition programmes”.

Business Benefits

Most businesses cannot afford for managers to take long periods of time away from the business.  The programmes from SR Education are flexible and are able to fit around a busy role, making it easier for companies to invest in the learning and development of staff.

Nick Colquitt, SR Education, Commercial Director said “Cardtronics are very forward thinking and understand the importance of staff development and the real business benefits and rewards that investing in employees can bring. Samantha has been a pleasure to work with and her desire to create programmes that benefit both the individual and the business is fantastic to see. We look forward to continuing to work with Samantha and the team at Cardtronics”.

CASE STUDY: JOHN’S STORY

Team Leadership Level 3:

John Torr, Building & Installations Manager at Cardtronics, based in Rotherham, recently completed the Level 3 Leadership Apprenticeship with SR Education and gained a distinction. We spoke to John to find out more about his experience and how it is assisting him in his role.

Deeper Understanding of Leadership Styles

‘Honestly, when I started on the course, I wasn’t overly enthused by the thought of it. I have a very busy and demanding role as a Building & Installations Manager here at Cardtronics, managing 35 people. I thought it would interfere with my day-to-day work. However, I quickly realised what an amazing opportunity the programme was. I cannot believe the skills I have learnt, from being more confident when I present to gaining new IT skills. Generally I have become much more confident and have learnt about what type of leader I am and the various ‘styles’ of leaders.

More importantly, I’ve developed a much deeper understanding of the different learning styles of the staff I manage and how each and every one of them responds to leadership in different ways.   This has enabled me to forge better working relationships and to get the most from each member of my team.

Understanding how to get the most from each member of my team was a game changer for me as I began to develop skills, to gain a better understanding of methods and personality types. My team work together brilliantly, but remembering, appreciating and understanding that they are individuals, all with different drivers, abilities, strengths and weaknesses has been a revelation – one that has improved my management skills and relationships with all my team.
The tools and techniques that we used to understand leadership were varied, with great tutors who challenged and developed everyone on the course, using the best learning style to suit the individual. I now apply those same skills to my own team!
I think it’s important to recognise that regardless of age and how long you have been in a management role, there are always aspects that can be improved, to make yourself a better manager and leader. My employer, Cardtronics, are extremely proactive and really support all levels of our workforce with training. As a results-driven business I can see the importance of ensuring all staff are at the top of their game and my training has certainly improved my leadership as well as my reporting skills, all contributing to the overall business success.’

The Next Steps

‘I’m applying for the Level 5 course next as I’ve really enjoyed the challenge. Also seeing how I can apply the skills and the benefits that I discover each and every day, has made me want to continue my learning journey!’

Holland & Barrett: A new apprenticeships approach for the UK’s leading health retailer.

The challenge: Create an apprenticeship programme to match and exceed the existing high standard of internal training.

Following the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy in 2017, Holland & Barrett decided to increase the number of apprentices within their business across all areas including Retail, Supply Chain, Customer Service, Digital Marketing and Operations.

Already strategically focussed on staff development across their workforce, Holland & Barrett’s number one priority was ensuring the apprenticeship programmes met the standards of their already high quality internal training – recouping their levy payments was a secondary benefit.

Understanding and planning how to maximise the levy

A complex system, its imperative to totally understand how to fully maximise the levy. Through SR Education’s expert advice, Holland & Barrett were able create a long-term plan with a detailed financial forecast including additional bottom line incentives such as NI contributions.

“We fully embrace the benefits of staff training and development and see the value of upskilling and building our workforce for the future – the fact this can now be done via apprenticeships and we can demonstrate additional financial benefits is a bonus.”  Sarah Greene, Accreditation Manager, Holland & Barrett

Co-creating tailored programmes with a trusted partner

Apprenticeship Standards are structured learning programmes encompassing the specific knowledge, skills and behaviours for the sector. A key benefit is the ability to tailor the learning programme to individual businesses.

Holland & Barrett gave SR Education full access to immerse themselves in their organisation to gain a thorough understanding of the business, values, existing training programmes and future requirements.

In turn, working in partnership, SR Education mapped the programmes to support the business needs creating a truly tailored and bespoke approach that encompassed Holland & Barrett’s existing high quality internal training to the apprenticeships.

Adding value with 20% Off the Job Training

Off the Job Training is extremely important within an apprenticeship to show development and learning of new skills, but many employers are concerned about losing employees for large chunks of time (20%) to complete this. Click HERE for our short video explaining OTJT

However, off the job’ does not mean ‘away from the job’. SR Education identified that many of Holland & Barrett’s existing training could count towards Off the Job Training such as mentoring, observations and project work. The relevant elements were mapped within the apprenticeship programme with a structured method to monitor and track time all whilst ensuring the apprentices continue to develop and be productive.

Flexible delivery on site

Delivery of the programme utilises SR Education’s blended learning solution. For example, Face-to-Face workshops are held at Holland & Barrett’s purpose-built training facility rather than apprentices having to travel to a third-party site.

“We selected SR Education as our chosen Training Provider due to their completely new approach and ability to tailor the programmes to our business to give us a totally bespoke solution.” Sarah Greene, Accreditation Manager, Holland & Barrett

Breaking down barriers and supporting internal communications

Internal buy-in at senior level is a key factor of success for any programme like this. In partnership with Holland & Barrett, SR Education developed and supported an internal communication strategy to change perceptions of apprenticeships and gain internal buy in to support this step-change that included;

  • Presentations to key decision makers across the business
  • Roadshows to educate, raise awareness and drive appetite for existing staff members to become apprentices

Looking ahead

With 23 apprentices currently on programme there are plans for a further 49 to start by June in the following standards; Retail, Team Leader, Supply Chain, Customer Service, Digital Marketing and Operations Manager.

“Having a responsive and dedicated account manager for an immediate answer to our queries is fantastic. SR Education have made a complex process simple and we look forward to working together with them as we grow the programme” Sarah Greene, Accreditation Manager, Holland & Barrett
